Fixed Interest

Fixed interest securities should be a key part of most investment portfolios and include investments such as term deposits, debentures or bonds.

Fixed interest securities are particularly attractive to investors who are seeking a higher rate of income and a stable capital value. They are however less attractive to investors who are seeking growth in income and capital value for example a hedge against inflation.

When evaluating fixed interest securities for investment, you should consider the credit quality of the issuer, the interest rate being offered, the marketability of the issue and the term of the investment.

While investors in fixed interest securities generally aim to maximise the interest rate, rates are generally higher for lower quality borrowers , less marketable securities and investments with a longer term.

Fixed interest securities can be acquired either from the issuer directly which is called the primary market or by buying them on the secondary market i.e. South Pacific Stock Exchange Limited.
